TECON Rio Grande has a commitment by means of a contract with the state government for expanding and modernizing its structure in accordance with a very strict chronogram. The terminal began its operations on March 1, 1997, and is designed to move 1,250,000 TEUs.
Being created as the result of a bidding process, the company called TECON RIO GRANDE S.A. began its operations on March 1, 1997.
Composed of a single shareholder, Wilson, Sons de Comércio Ltda., TECON RIO GRANDE S.A will manage the Container Terminal of the Port of Rio Grande for 25 years, which is renewable for 25 more years, with the goal of being one of the best container terminals in South America.
Willing to carry out the plan for expanding and modernizing the terminal in such a way as to build an installation that is quite competitive in South America, the company has invested US $60 million over its 9 years of existence. The contract with the state government for expanding and modernizing its structure is in accordance with a very strict chronogram. The terminal began is designed to move 1,250,000 TEUs.
Among the investments that have been made, what stands out are the duplication of the mooring docks to 600 meters, two post-panamax cranes (the only ones in Brazil), three mobile cranes, an area of 235,000 sq. meters for moving and storing containers, 17,000 square meters of warehouses for special and general cargo, ten new gates for access to and exit from the terminal, yard equipment, and the most modern computerized system for operational management that is available in the global market.
Being extremely focused on the customer and solving his problems, the company receives in its terminal all of the main shipping companies ( 30 ship owners) that stop over in Brazil, besides having 2,500 importers and exporters registered in its portfolio, and is a great tool for the economic development of the state.
Creating jobs has also been a reality of TECON Rio Grande. The company began its activities with 64 people, and its current staff has already reached 750 employees who are specially trained for their functions. The Terminal is yet the largest employer of free-lance labor in the Rio Grande port complex, my means of leading-edge agreements that were signed with trade unions.
Through salaries and wages, taxes and payments to the Port Authority and social activities, R$106,000,000 was the economic participation that the company TECON Rio Grande made in the community in 2005.
By moving 99% of the containerized cargo that goes through the Port of Rio Grande, the major goal TECON Rio Grande is to concentrate the cargo of the Southern Cone countries, and it is clearly supported by its physical and geographical advantages, by investments that have been made, by competitive prices, and principally by the project for expanding its installations with one more 250-meter mooring berth, totaling 850 meters in which ships can operate, with investments on the order of US $30 million, to be carried out from 2006 until mid-2008.
